The Fushigi Ball Is So Cool!

August 6, 2010 by fushigi · Leave a Comment

I love your Fushigi Ball site and I’m so glad I found it. Yesterday I was in Venice Beach and saw two guys doing this awesome trick with fushigi balls. At the time I didn’t know what they were called but there was a group of people watching in total amazement and I was one of them.

These guys played around for about 45 minutes before I had to interrupt them and ask what the heck they were doing. There were not professional jugglers or anything like that, they just said they were practicing Fushigi.  They had seen it on television and had theirs for about a month or so.

They let me try and I was terrible, I could quite grasp the basics but when I left I could not stop thinking about how absolutely cool it was and I needed to have one. I called a bunch of stores and nobody sold them. Not toy stores, not magic stores or even hobby stores.

I hate ordering things online but you guys seem to be one of the only places to get them so I ordered one. I thought the shipping was a little expensive but compared to the other ones I saw on Amazon (that were not even Fushigi Balls)it was still cheaper.

Put some more videos up of people teaching tricks because when I get mine I really want to learn.

Fushigi Ball: Gravity Balls Used In Labyrinth

Fushigi Balls In Movies

Ever since this Fushigi Ball site went up, not a day goes by that we don’t get an email asking if the Fushigi Ball was used in the movie Labyrinth. You may recall that Jim Henson decided to use contact juggling and the skills of Michael Moschen to make it look like David Bowie was doing some magic.

The answer to the question is both yes and no, but mostly no. These are contact juggling balls used my Moschen who basically invented the art, but they are not fushigi ball. However, the development of Fushigi was clearly modeled after these “crystal balls” and is currently bringing a lot of attention contact juggling. It is apparently also sparking some renewed interest in Labyrinth as well.

Here is an interesting piece regarding the gravity balls and how they were used in the film.

Fushigi Gravity Ball Tricks: The Palm Roll

August 3, 2010 by fushigi · Leave a Comment

I’m really glad that Fushigi-Ball.com liked my email I sent them and posted it on this blog. They asked me to keep my fushigi tricks coming so other people could learn as I do so here is fushigi trick #2.

The Palm Roll is a very basic fushigi trick but it was hard for me to learn. It took several days before I perfected it but now it is super cool. I think the hard part was getting used to motion of the ball and how to place my hands. It was the first trick I tried to learn where the fushigi was actually moving and if you don’t do it right it doesn’t look like magic.

To do the palm roll you need to flatten your palm and face it up toward the ceiling. Rest the fushigi in your palm and gently tilt your fingers so the ball can start to roll and gently pull your arm back towards yourself like you are pulling the rug out from the fushigi. I do this over the bed so when I drop it it has a soft place to land and I don’t need to bend down very far to pick it up.

So I learned to let it roll of my hand in a very controlled manner. Next you have bring your opposite hand out in front of the hand holding the fushigi ball, also with the palm facing up. Hold it flat and let the fushigi roll into the second hand. Remember to pull the first hand back towards you while it remains flat.

Repeat this several times. Keep replacing your hands and let the ball roll from hand to hand. Once you are good at not dropping it, it is time to create the illusion. The idea is let the ball roll from one hand to the other in the very same spot making it look like the ball is staying still. It should not move backward with your retreating hand and not roll forward into your accepting hand. If you place the palm of your accepting hand exactly where the fingers of your retreating hand were the ball will roll but appear only to spin, but not move forward or back.

This was the tough part that took a few days. I just let the ball roll from the base of one hand to the base of the other over and over for hours and learned to get as much control as possible. Once I got that down I began to concentrate on the angles of my arms to make it look more like the fushigi ball was floating just above my hands. I looked in the mirror a lot.

This wasn’t as easy as I had hoped, but it was worth it. Now I’m pretty good at controlling the ball for other, much harder tricks.

Fushigi Gravity Ball… So Cool!

August 2, 2010 by fushigi · Leave a Comment

The fushigi magic gravity ball has got to be one of the coolest things ever offered on late night television. The commercials are amazing. At first you are not even quite sure what you are looking at. Is it a toy or trick? Well, first things first. The fushigi is a little bit of both.

After going completely nuts for this thing I tried to research it online but I could not even remember the silly name. I’m sure a lot of others are having the same problem. Eventually I was able to find very similar products when searching for contact juggling. Contact juggling is an art form that was invented back in the 80′s and has been astonishing people ever since. It is truly a performance art but the advent of the fushigi ball intends to change that.

After finally figuring out how to order one, I received my Fushigi and got started. It comes with an instructional DVD which has a lot of great info, but I quickly realized that you can do these tricks with an ordinary ball. It will not look as cool and the element of floating will not be present, but once you master the basics you can contact juggle with anything. Having said that, I’m glad I got my fushigi ball because it is awesome.

Learning how to contact juggle is not hard but it takes lots of patience and a ton of practice. The people in the demonstration videos are experts so don’t think you are gonna open the box and turn in Houdini. But, learning the basic moves is relatively simple and it is thrilling to complete your first trick.

There is not a human alive who isn’t amazed when they see someone using the fushigi gravity ball so do not learn this if you don’t want to be the center of attention. It is amazing how people both young and old are drawn to the product and I would not be surprised if it is the next fad that has people in a rush to get them by Christmas.

To date, you can only order this product online because you will not find the fushigi ball in stores. So if you choose to get one, be sure to give yourself ample time for its arrival. There are definitely other acrylic contact juggling balls out there but the good ones are more than twice the price of Fushigi. In my opinion this product is terrific for beginners and at its current price is a heck of a deal.

Fushigi Ball Tricks: The Thumb Hold

August 1, 2010 by fushigi · Leave a Comment

So I’ve had my Fushigi Gravity Ball for about 2 weeks and I’m getting pretty good with it. I have to say that I’m impressed with its toughness because I keeping dropping it, and I mean a lot. I was sure I would have destroyed it by now but so far so good.

The first the I learned was the thumb hold. I know it is the easy trick in world but if you do it right it is really cool and first piece of evidence I have to prove that the fushigi ball is kind of like magic.

All you need to do is straighten the palm of your hand out and then place the fushigi ball on your palm. Lift your thumb like you are trying to touch the ceiling and touch it to the side of the fushigi ball. Then press your thumb firmly against the side of the Fushigi Ball making sure you keep your palm flat, then turn you hand over with palm facing the floor.

If you did it right the palm of your hand should be on top of the fushigi ball and it should stay there like it is suspended in mid air. If your thumb is facing your body it won’t look like anything special, but for someone sitting or standing opposite of you, it will look like the fushigi is defying gravity and stuck to your hand much like an astronaut walking on the ceiling.

As you learn to move your hand about in cool ways this trick can become part of a nice fushigi routine. I know this one is simple, but it is the first I learned and it was pretty fun.
